Higher Education Carbon Footprint Reports

Introduction

Developing a Carbon Footprint Report represents the first step in managing a university’s carbon footprint. Sharing Carbon Footprint Reports gives universities in South Africa the opportunity to learn from one another and improve their own reporting efforts. It is an attempt to create greater transparency about the greenhouse gas emissions generated by universities, which will hopefully inspire a growing number of universities to measure and publicly report their carbon footprint. Each university currently presents their reports in the format they have developed, but over time and depending on available capacity within the HESCoP, a uniform format that will allow a consolidated report might ultimately be prepared on a regular basis to track industry-wide performance. The first reports published precede the Covid-19 lockdowns (where available), to enable a comparison between pre- and post-lockdown levels of greenhouse gas emissions.
