Leadership and Management Strategy Group (LMSG)

Priority focus areas from 2023 to 2026:

  • Governance, Leadership and Management: to identify and address the key challenges and opportunities in university governance, leadership, and management.
  • Collaboration and National Interests: to facilitate collaboration on university governance, leadership, and management, by streamlining and synergising capacitation efforts rather than duplication. The Group will also explore collaboration in advancing research and scholarship, executive education, change management and organisational development and support.
  • Joint initiatives with the Council on Higher Education: Examples are the biennial National Higher Education conference, university governance, induction into senior / executive positions, vice-chancellors’ mid-year or year-end workshops and annual leadership retreats, and other initiatives.
  • Global Engagement: by examining models and innovative thinking from International and regional good practice, higher education leaders in South Africa can broaden their horizons and engage with future-facing concepts. Examples are the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences, including local and international deans’ groupings; the Texas International Education Consortium in renewable energy and other focus areas and the Hungarian Rectors’ Conference through joint initiatives and fundraising.
  • Ownership, Purpose, and Sustainability of HELM: the Group will focus on the financial sustainability of HELM and explore expansion of services to private higher education providers and the Southern African Development Cooperation region.
