Education Deans’ Forum (EDF)

The Education Deans’ Forum (EDF) aims to foster research in the broad field of education towards continuous improvement to teacher education; to promote South Africa’s education interests by providing a platform for deans to discuss matters of common concern in the delivery of teacher education, and, finally, to bring to the attention of policy makers, emerging issues pertaining to the Education discipline.

Amongst other stakeholders, the EDF engages the departments of Basic Education (DBE) and Higher Education and Training (DHET), the South African Council for Educators (SACE), JET Education Services and other bodies in the education sector. The Forum continuously advocates for teacher education and education as a discipline. The education deans also pay attention to new developments and challenges in the education space; share information and devise appropriate solutions around all issues in this regard.

Pan African Deans of Education (PADEF)

In 2023, the EDF played a leading role in the formation of an Africa-wide networking platform of deans that was launched on 23 July from Makerere University in Uganda. The then EDF Chairperson, Professor Chika Sehoole, who, at the time, was the Dean of Education at the University of Pretoria, went on to be elected the interim chair of the Pan-African Deans of Education Forum (PADEF), alongside six other office bearers from universities in Tanzania, South Africa, and Uganda.
