TLM CoP meeting: 13 August 2025
The second TLM CoP meeting of the year was held online on Wednesday, 13 August 2025. The theme was “Integrating AI and Other Digital Technologies into University-Level Mathematics Teaching.” The day’s presentations explored how generative AI can support conceptual understanding in STEM subjects, led by Dr Mzwandile Wiseman Zulu and Dr Lerato Hlengiwe Sokhulu, both Lecturers at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Dr Tanya de Villiers-Botha, Unit Head: Ethics of Technology at the Centre for Applied Ethics at Stellenbosch University, spoke on some of the ethical considerations of AI integration in teaching and learning in higher education.
Members also received updates on the Mega Maths Festival and other initiatives to improve mathematics performance in high schools. Speakers in this regard were Mr Phillip Tshabalala, Chief Director: Teaching, Learning and Research Development in the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET,) and Ms Elspeth Khembo, Director: Mathematics, Science and Technology, Curriculum Innovation and E-Learning in the Department of Basic Education (DBE).
