Summary of the impact:

Our research contributed evidence that allowed for near real-time interventions to curb the spread of
Covid-19 in South Africa. This project provided early warning data on Covid-19 transmission through
weekly surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 (the cause of Covid-19) in wastewater in the Vhembe and Mopane
districts in Limpopo Province. The beneficiaries included: (1) Municipal authorities of the two districts for
local and appropriate interventions in curbing the spread of Covid-19 in their regions. (2) The weekly
surveillance data provided to the national dashboard at the South African Medical Research Council
contributed to the national predictions of Covid-19 waves throughout 2021-2022.
