Generating Talent: Transforming Support for the Research Landscape in South Africa
In March 2019, 20 of South Africa’s 26 public universities converged on the University of Johannesburg grounds to explore developing the capacity of early-career researchers at South Africa’s public universities. Universities South Africa co-hosted this symposium in collaboration with the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU). Delegates explored numerous topics, including challenges confronting early-career researchers and the support programmes available to them, locally and from the ACU. The symposium concluded with detailed recommendations for appropriate interventions to accelerate the capacity building of emerging scholars from a range of perspectives, including university policy and strategy, institutional structures, and planning and funding.
The Report titled Generating Talent: Transforming Support for the Research Landscape in South Africa documents those recommendations, which serve as an action plan for the medium to long term.
