Co-Creating a Resilient Future

Dr Phethiwe Matutu

Message from the USAf Chief Executive Officer

South Africa’s universities stand at a defining moment in their history. Across the world, higher education institutions are navigating profound change shaped by technological disruption, economic uncertainty, shifting societal expectations, climate challenges, evolving labour markets, and growing demands for equity and inclusion. At the same time, universities remain among society’s most important institutions, entrusted with developing knowledge, nurturing talent, advancing innovation, and contributing to social and economic progress.

Against this backdrop, Universities South Africa (USAf) is proud to present the 2026 Higher Education Conference under the theme, “Co-creating a Resilient Future.” This theme recognises that resilience is no longer simply about surviving disruption. It is about renewing institutions, reimagining possibilities, and strengthening our collective capacity to shape a future that is equitable, sustainable, and responsive to our society’s needs.

The concept of co-creation lies at the heart of this year’s conference. The complex challenges confronting higher education cannot be addressed by universities acting alone. Meaningful and lasting solutions require collaboration across sectors and disciplines, bringing together universities, government, industry, communities, civil society organisations, students, and international partners. Through shared vision, mutual accountability, and collective action, we can create conditions that enable higher education to thrive and contribute more effectively to national, continental, and global development.

This conference also invites us to look beyond the immediate challenges facing the sector and engage in a deeper conversation about the future of the university itself. What should universities look like in an increasingly digital and interconnected world? How do we ensure that our institutions remain credible, relevant, and trusted? How can universities balance excellence with inclusion, innovation with social responsibility, and global competitiveness with local impact? These are among the critical questions that will shape our discussions.

The programme has been designed to encourage thoughtful engagement on a wide range of issues that are central to the future of higher education. From governance and leadership to academic innovation, from student success and societal impact to digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and sustainable funding models, the conference provides an opportunity for participants to explore both current realities and future possibilities.

Importantly, our conversations are grounded in the understanding that universities are not merely responding to change; they are active agents in shaping it. As institutions of learning, discovery, and public good, universities have a unique responsibility to contribute to social cohesion, democratic participation, economic growth, and sustainable development. The knowledge, partnerships, and innovations that emerge from our institutions must help address some of the most pressing challenges of our time while creating opportunities for future generations.

The 2026 Conference, therefore, serves not only as a platform for reflection but also as a call to action. It challenges all stakeholders to think boldly, act collaboratively, and embrace innovation in pursuit of a higher education system that is resilient, inclusive, and future-focused. Together, we have an opportunity to strengthen the foundations of our universities while reimagining their role in a rapidly changing world.

I extend my sincere appreciation to all delegates, speakers, partners, and stakeholders who have joined us in this important endeavour. Your insights, experiences, and commitment will enrich the dialogue and help chart a constructive path forward for higher education in South Africa and beyond.

As we engage over the course of this conference, may we be inspired by the possibilities that emerge when we work together, challenge conventional thinking, and co-create solutions that will serve our institutions, our communities, and our country for generations to come.

4th USAf Higher Education Conference:

Overview

The Universities South Africa (USAf) Higher Education Conference 2026 serves as a premier platform for thought leadership, strategic dialogue, and collaborative engagement among leaders in higher education, government, industry, civil society, and international partner institutions. The conference is designed to explore the role of universities in addressing contemporary challenges while shaping a sustainable and inclusive future for higher education.

The conference theme, “Co-creating a Resilient Future”, reflects the recognition that resilience, innovation, and renewal can only be achieved through meaningful collaboration. The theme acknowledges that universities operate in an increasingly complex environment characterised by financial pressures, technological disruption, social inequality, policy uncertainty, climate change, and evolving societal expectations. It positions higher education institutions as both leaders and partners in driving transformation and sustainable development.

Central to the conference is the concept of co-creation, which emphasises shared responsibility among multiple stakeholders, including universities, government, communities, civil society organisations, industry, employers, and international partners. Through collaborative approaches, the conference seeks to identify innovative solutions that strengthen institutional resilience, enhance student success, advance research impact, and ensure universities’ continued relevance in a rapidly changing world.

The programme will facilitate critical reflection on the future of higher education through a series of interconnected sub-themes covering governance and leadership, academic innovation, societal impact, student success, equity and inclusion, institutional resilience, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and sustainable funding models. These discussions will challenge participants to rethink traditional assumptions about the purpose, structure, and operation of universities while exploring new approaches to knowledge creation, teaching and learning, research, and community engagement.

By bringing together influential voices from across the higher education ecosystem, the conference aims to generate practical insights, strengthen partnerships, and develop collective strategies that will enable universities to remain responsive, adaptable, and impactful. Ultimately, the conference seeks to reinforce the sector’s contribution to societal renewal, economic development, social justice, and the advancement of the public good in South Africa and beyond.

The outcomes of the conference are expected to inform future policy discussions, institutional strategies, and collaborative initiatives that support a resilient, innovative, and equitable higher education sector capable of meeting both current demands and future opportunities.
