Universities South Africa (USAf) has announced “Co-creating a Resilient Future” as the overarching theme for its 2026 Higher Education Conference, signalling a bold commitment to collaboration, innovation, and sustainability in a rapidly changing higher education landscape.

The theme emerged from deliberations by the Conference Advisory Committee, which recognised the growing need for South African universities to adapt to mounting societal, economic, technological, and environmental pressures while remaining central to national development and transformation.

Building on the concepts of innovation, resilience, and renewal, the chosen theme reflects a shared vision for a sector that not only withstands disruption but also shapes a more inclusive and sustainable future through collective action.

At the heart of the conference theme is the principle of co-creation, which recognises that universities cannot navigate contemporary challenges in isolation. Instead, meaningful partnerships between higher education institutions, government, industry, communities, civil society organisations and international partners are essential to building resilient systems and achieving lasting impact.

The conference will provide a platform for critical reflection on the future role of universities in South Africa and globally, while encouraging stakeholders to reimagine traditional approaches to governance, knowledge production, student success, research, and institutional sustainability.

The programme will explore a wide range of interconnected sub-themes designed to stimulate debate and inspire innovative thinking. These include governance and accountability, academic innovation, research and societal impact, student success, equity and inclusion, institutional resilience, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and sustainable funding models for higher education.

The conference will also examine how universities can strengthen their role as catalysts for social justice, economic development and public good, while responding to emerging challenges such as technological disruption, climate change, changing labour market demands, and growing expectations for accountability and relevance.

According to Mr Mahlubi Mabizela, Director: Operations and Support at USAf, the selected theme reflects an important shift towards collective responsibility in shaping the future of higher education.

“The theme ‘Co-creating a Resilient Future’ acknowledges that the challenges facing higher education today are complex and interconnected. Building resilient universities requires collaboration across sectors and disciplines. Through this conference, we aim to create a space for meaningful dialogue, innovative thinking and practical solutions that will enable our institutions to thrive while contributing to a more equitable and sustainable society,” said Mabizela.

The conference will require delegates to move beyond discussions of best practice and engage in deeper conversations about the future of higher education. Participants will be invited to critically examine the purpose, legitimacy and evolving identity of universities in an increasingly uncertain world.

Key discussions will focus on creating adaptive institutions capable of responding to crises, fostering visionary leadership, strengthening public trust, advancing digital resilience, and ensuring that graduates are equipped with the skills and competencies needed to succeed in an unpredictable future.
