Developing an Inclusive Approach to Internationalisation in South African Higher Education

Universities South Africa (USAf) invites members of the higher education sector, including institutional leaders, academics, policymakers and other stakeholders, to the launch of its latest position paper, Developing an Approach to Internationalisation in South African Universities: Employment Equity and the Appointment of International Staff, authored by Professor Crain Soudien.

Commissioned by the USAf Transformation Strategy Group (TSG), the paper provides a critical examination of the relationship between internationalisation, transformation and employment equity within the South African higher education landscape. It addresses the complex policy and institutional considerations associated with the appointment of international academic staff while foregrounding national development imperatives and transformation objectives.

The position paper explores the intersections between internationalisation and Africanisation, analyses employment equity frameworks and policy perspectives, and evaluates the contributions of international scholars to the South African university sector. Through its evidence-based analysis and recommendations, the paper seeks to inform ongoing policy deliberations and institutional practice, contributing to a nuanced and constructive dialogue on the future of internationalisation in South African higher education.
