Conversations from the Chancellor’s & Vice-Chancellor’s Leadership Dialogue

Johannesburg – South Africa’s universities cannot confront the country’s unemployment crisis or prepare graduates for a rapidly changing economy through isolated effort.

This was the main message delivered by Dr. Reuel J Khoza, Chancellor of the University of Limpopo, during a roundtable discussion at the recent University Chancellors’ Thought Leadership Event hosted by Universities South Africa (USAf).

Dr. Khoza warned that South Africa’s unemployment figures, which stand at 32.7% overall, nearly 60% among youth and 12.4% among graduates, reflect a deep structural mismatch between education outputs and labour market needs.
