7th RISG Biennial Research and Innovation Dialogue 2023

The 2023 Research and Innovation Dialogue took place on 21 and 22 September at the Umhlanga Coastlands Convention Centre, just north of Durban. This event is an initiative of USAf’s Research and Innovation Strategy Group (RISG), that gives effect to one of the RISG’s objectives to strengthen the research infrastructure and bolster research and innovation in the higher education sector.

As per set tradition the 7th Research and Innovation Dialogue gathered universities’ executives comprising deputy vice-chancellors and heads of departments; CEOs of science councils, the Council on Higher Education and USAf; senior representatives of the Departments of Higher Education and Training and Science and Innovation; the International Education Association of Southern Africa and the National Research Foundation.

The 2023 theme, Research and Innovation for Societal and Economic Impact, was unpacked through the following four sub-themes:

Research and Innovation Impact — Moving towards a conceptual framework for research and innovation for universities.
Student Mobility— Rethinking student mobility nationally and internationally.
Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Societal Impact — Creating an enabling ecosystem for social innovation and entrepreneurship at universities.
Transformative Internationalisation — Towards a transformative and inclusive internationalisation strategy for USAf.

The R&I Dialogue 2023 lived up to its name as a platform for rich, insightful and provocative conversations. It also yielded a comprehensive list of recommendations that will inform a plan of action and a direction setter for the RISG, as the Group takes the research and innovation agenda forward.
